Labor Relations Report - Weapons In The Workplace: The Employer's
Response
No less than twenty-nine states allow licensed individuals to carry a
concealed handgun. Many of these states only recently implemented
concealed weapons laws, the implications of which are enormous. These
new laws have heightened employers' awareness of the possibility of
weapons in the workplace and the risks posed by employees, patrons and
visitors lawfully bringing concealed weapons onto business premises.
Recognizing that these laws can only add to the risk posed by workplace
violence, employers have responded by implementing workplace safety
programs that specifically address the problem posed by weapons in the
workplace. This discussion addresses a number of legal and practical
considerations for employers to contemplate in formulating and
implementing a no-weapons policy appropriate for their workplaces.
