Labor Relations Report - Weapons In The Workplace: The Employer's Response

No less than twenty-nine states allow licensed individuals to carry a concealed handgun. Many of these states only recently implemented concealed weapons laws, the implications of which are enormous. These new laws have heightened employers' awareness of the possibility of weapons in the workplace and the risks posed by employees, patrons and visitors lawfully bringing concealed weapons onto business premises. Recognizing that these laws can only add to the risk posed by workplace violence, employers have responded by implementing workplace safety programs that specifically address the problem posed by weapons in the workplace. This discussion addresses a number of legal and practical considerations for employers to contemplate in formulating and implementing a no-weapons policy appropriate for their workplaces.
